Why do you play chess? You like to beat people up and chess is a good way to do so,you like to think and chess is a good strategy game to expand your thoughts, etc.(Those are just ideas,I'm sure there are a lot more so feel free to post your thoughts).

I sometimes wonder... ...why I play this game! But it never loses its fascination for me. It keeps the mind sharp, and there's so much to explore and learn from the game, its players, its past, its strategies and tactics. It teaches concentration, logical thinking, foresight(and hindsight!)analytical skills, and intuition. It's equal parts logic and fantasy,a struggle,a fight,an art,an inspiration.

I play chess for the same reason that i eat,, sleep or breathe - for without it I would die !! Maybe not a physical death but a spiritaul one . chess is in my spirit and will be til the day I die !! I am a chess addict and I am not sorry that I got addicted . yours bluebabygirl

bluebabygirl lol,no mean to offend but if you take out the "chess" word in your post and replaced it with "drugs",it is still amazingly matched both meaning and grammar(except "play chess" for "use drugs").

to lordnguyenvo very observant of you , why do you think i referred to it as an addiction . a great many people have such a passion for chess, also not just chess some feel this way about golf, hunting ,, fishing , baseball ,, football ,, tennis etc. its just a matter of how passionately you involve yourself in your chosen thing . im almost as passionate about archery too. I think my feelings about the game of chess are not unique . I think that some others here are just as passionate about chess as I . maybe some even more so . yours bluebabygirl

Why I play chess... Fischer said it best... Chess is life...

Bro...
drgandalf ♡ 90 ( +1 | -1 )
I practice rather than play For me, chess is not a game to play. Rather, it is a discipline for wisdom. Given a well-defined environment of board and piece characteristics, each position tries to tell me its unique truth, that is, the best strategy or tactic or move. If I am humble enough, I will seek that truth out, going deeper as I rise in rating.

Just as a physician practices medicine and an attorney law, so too do I practice chess.

I have found that my approach to chess allows me to transfer this wisdom-vision to other aspects of life. I master the particular situation better when I train myself to master the chess position.

My goal in chess is not to attain a rating status, but rather to master life situations far better than my competitors. So, for me, chess is neither an addiction nor a pasttime. As for chess being an art or a science, that question is of little practical importance to the attainment of my goals.

mostly, it amazes me It has to do with art, science, and sport(like it was said in Chess for Dummies) it also has to do with tactics and math. It is a culture, and whenever I play a new game, I feel it should at least resemble a different game I've played, but it never does, each game is different. New things keep coming up in it.
silverwolfwsc ♡ 35 ( +1 | -1 )
i like chess because it challenges my mind. There are not many games that can do that. (not that its hard to challenge ME necessarily, but most games just simply arent challenging to your brain).

Chess is like any other sport, but for your brain. I find it to be fascinating, and.... well, i dont know, i think you get the point.

Im tired and rambling, off to bed.

sorry to post again But I forgot to say, I am a chess addict, but I'm sorry I got addicted to it. it wastes more of my time than it should
cairo ♡ 94 ( +1 | -1 )
I think we all have to admit that we are moreless addicted to this game.
When I started to play this game, I wanted to be the best, I soon realised that this was only a dream, but still all the aspects in this game are so fascinating and once in while your succeed by playing a game, that you really feel good about, its like all your hard work gives bonus!
On top of everything I have met so many nice people over the years playing this game, it is universal, it makes no difference if your black, white, red, yellow, female, male any religion will do, it is simply a universal language, were we all can meat accross all borders and political/religion systems.

You gotta LUV IT!!!!!!!!!!!

Best wishes
Cairo

PS! I can only say one bad thing about chess, that is to lose, awful painful it is, but you got to live with it :-))

Because like all good games... ...and I include poker here too, they are very easy to learn, yet difficult to master. Also, people can play some games in different styles; conservatively, taking few risks (except risking boring opponents to death), or gung-ho aggression, which can lead to a quick and massive win or a sad loss...!

because I cant play table tennis.... ;)

I play because I crave the conflict. Chess is a struggle in the form of a meeting of ideas. Also, unlike some games, chess is a solitary endeavor; there is no collaboration, no team, and so the ideas that I directly initiate are solely my own (which are subsequently modified by my opponent, of course). Further, chess fosters an atmosphere of conflict in a safe environment. No one is intentionally trying to injure another (hopefully), there's nothing really serious at stake (well, unless you're a professional, I suppose), and at the end, everyone can just get up, walk away, and go home. Maybe I'm just a drama queen in disguise.

So I continue to play and study in the hopes that my skill improves, thus opening the door to new struggles.
kremator ♡ 3 ( +1 | -1 )
I play chess.... because my grandpa told me to
anaxagoras ♡ 37 ( +1 | -1 )
A lot of the same reasons stated above. I love how chess makes you think about very difficult problems, its competitive aspect, and the fact that any credit or blame is to be placed on a single person and his or her choices. Moreover, good chess positions have a character of depth that is so astounding, I actually experience pleasure from their study.

! Chess is a curse - after coming this far I feel as if I must dedicate much of my life to mastering the game. It has become more than a game it is transformed into an obsession and I'm not sure whether this is good or bad. I do know that no matter how much we put into the pursuit of mastery there is just not enough time to in one's life to discover all that there is to know, love, and learn about chess!
kremator ♡ 7 ( +1 | -1 )
Chess is a curse No kidding. I wasted $200 on chess(most in overdue library books)!
bluebabygirl ♡ 27 ( +1 | -1 )
to kremator dont waste that money paying library fines just buy a book about fischers games ---study FISCHER 'S games and you should improve greatly . I know i did . and if the Fischer man is not your cup of tea buy a book on TAL'S games it will do the same . yours bluebabygirl .

I like learning I like learninga bout computing.. programming.. mainly math.. all sciences.. chess is just another thing to learn and master.. I like gathering knowledge..
invincible1 ♡ 23 ( +1 | -1 )
why i play chess.... I am addicted. This is a wonderful fascinating game that I have never understood!

Music, Wine, Women and Chess,
Make a Man powerless .....

This is a nice quote I came up with! Not that every bit of it applies to me.
superblunder ♡ 26 ( +1 | -1 )
I play to concentrate my mind...much like meditation or zen practice. When I am playing well, it is because my mind is extremely focused. When I make a mistake it is because I am not paying enough attention, so it is like I get direct feedback on how well I am concentrating my mind.
bluebabygirl ♡ 89 ( +1 | -1 )
I play to free my mind from the confines of this dull world . when i play chess im very happy, when im winning im even more joyful and when im losing im happy - happy that im not losing at some dumb stupid other game. id rather lose at chess than win at backgammon , monopoly , cards and most other computer games , to me winning has very little meaning unless its a chess game . so call me a chess freak. see if I care . I am addicted to CAISSA'S game!. To share her glory to share her fame! ever to struggle on her golden board !Yes richer than the greatest king's treasure hoard ! She tempts me with her greatest treasure! she challenges us all, to simply take our measure!!Never to truly grasp her golden shield !!!Or wander her lofty halls or bear fruit in her planted field !! yours bluebabygirl

Who's Caissa? Somebody told me she's chess legend of some sort of how come I never heard about it?Anybody knows?
clemens ♡ 4 ( +1 | -1 )
Caissa, I think, is the goddess of chess.
kremator ♡ 10 ( +1 | -1 )
Caissa Is a variant of chess played on a 7 by 7 board. That wouldn't work in the above sentences though.
bluebabygirl ♡ 36 ( +1 | -1 )
to all clemens is right she is the goddess of chess. try reading about this great game not just playing it . It has such a wonderful rich history in fact and in fiction . if you do not know Caissa , then she will never show you her favors . and her favors are something to be desired ! Caissa and I are great friends she has often showered me with favors . yours bluebabygirl
lordnguyenvo ♡ 50 ( +1 | -1 )
You need to be a little more reality, bluebabygirl.I know you want to be a writer and I think you really got talent for it but talk normal next time ok?By the way,Caissa is from folklore or something?Cause I know about great chess players and world champs since Morphy's time but nobody ever mentioned this name.If she is a real player then maybe you could send me a few games of hers.
bluebabygirl ♡ 48 ( +1 | -1 )
to lordnguyenvo no she is not a real person , she is the Goddess of chess. just think in terms of mythology -- Zeus ,,Hera ,,Apollo,,Jupiter ,, Mars ,, Neptune or even Norse mythology like Odin,, Thor ,,Loki etc.. get it . I would send you some of her games but she made me take an oath not to. you see she plays PERFECT chess and man is not ready nor able to understand such. and i never break an oath, yours bluebabygirl. p.s. thanks for saying I have a talent for writing - all compliments are supremely welcome !
gothicgirl ♡ 106 ( +1 | -1 )
to lordnguyenvo I can contribute some more information about caissa. her name first appeared in 1763, first used by Vida and then by the writer W. Jones, who wrote 2 poems about her (advertissment to caissa and caissa, or the game of chess). She also appeared in Greek Mythology, as the Goddess of chess.

You asked a question (Why do you play chess), that is really that general and on the other side so personal, that every player has an own answer to it! And there is no wrong way at this point! There is a way, that is maybe not yours. Thats ok, but there are also other reasons for playing chess! And there are many more aspects of chess, than the game itself! I think, that bluebabygirls way of loving chess is very beautiful, lyrical and also mythologycal. A very nice side of chess, that also does exist! And why more reality? its also okay, not to be real, simply to dream! I like bluebabygirls way of thinking and talking about chess! According to chess, she has a message, that should be listened, its worth it...........
lordnguyenvo ♡ 64 ( +1 | -1 )
Thanks for the reply, bluebabygirl and gothicgirl.I understand now.
One little part that I think you misunderstand me though. What I mean was that her way of talking confused me sometimes.ex:"I would send you some of her games but she made me take an oath not to. you see she plays PERFECT chess and man is not ready nor able to understand such. and i never break an oath".So are there actually her games or not?(I'm guessing not)
It is cool when somebody talk a little bit mythological but I'm confused when normal and mythology mixed up.Sorry.
nimzoredivivus ♡ 19 ( +1 | -1 )
Chess is the most fascinating game there is. Within 64 squares the possibilities are endless. It is an exercise for the mind like none other. Besides, when Caissa extends her hand -- who can refuse her?
brucehum ♡ 32 ( +1 | -1 )
Why oh why? Why play chess? Good question. Cairo answered it quite well: at this moment chess is an adiction. I also like the feeling you get when you meet someone you knew at a chess tournament 5-6 years later!

OTB: I like the ambient of a chess tournament, it is quite crazy, really, if you think about it.
bluebabygirl ♡ 17 ( +1 | -1 )
re- after playing chess - better question is Why play anything else?????????????????? besides if Caissa sends this gift to you why would you question her favor???????????yours BBG
