In what is being dubbed as the New Match of the 21st Century, team RUSSIA will be battling it out with the rest of the WORLD in Moscow, September 8-12.
The details of this event were released at an ITAR-TASS press conference yesterday June 11 in which Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, Garry Kasparov, Vecheslav Fetisov (Russian Minister of Sport) and Andrey Selivanov (President of Russian chess federation) were all in attendance.
The famous matches between Russia and the Rest of the World were first held in Belgrade 1970 and again in London in 1984. The formula for this new long-awaited match will be: 10 boards based on a Scheveningen rapid chess game system.
The Russian Team will comprise: Kramnik, Kasparov, Karpov, Khalifman,Morozevich, Bareev, Grischuk, Svidler, and Dreev (and the last place will be contested by Rublevsky, Zviagintzev or the current Russian Champion Alexander Motylev).
The World Team includes Ponomariov, Anand and some of the other best players in the world.
Garry Kasparov admitted that chess is the only sport where Russia has a fighting chance against the best of the rest. But as the Russian team seems to have no clear advantage as it did in previous years, a tough and close battle is expected.
Kirsan Ilyumzhinov informed the press that the organization of the event and the prize fund (approximately $1,000,000) will be sponsored by "Alfa Bank" – one of Russia’s best-known banks.
