Chessmaster Chessmaster 9000 is a good program for beginner-intermediate players, and it has a lot of good instructional lessons, as well as some good games by Josh Waitzkin where he explains his position and thinking on each move.

I have used Fritz a lot too, and while it seems to be a stronger engine, it doesnt seem to have quite the instructional aspect to it that CM does. It does do a great job of analyzing and annotating your games, and I like the UI better than CM, but i have improved a lot more because of CM than Fritz.

I have a hint to give--- don't buy 9000, buy 8000. 8000 is a lot cheaper, and their isn't a significant difference between the two. Also, if you have Win2k, don't buy it--- it doesn't run very well on it.

8000 I have XP so this should be alright?

i disagree i had 8000, and it ran horribly on 2K. I bought 9000 and it runs flawlessly. In 8K, there was no clock, and it would crash, but leave the engine running. No problems yet in 9K.

Plumpfire, XP is only supported in 9K, 8K only supports 9x OSes.

Of course neither of them support 2K, but 9000 is much more stable.

9000 Thanks for all the advice.

I have CM 9000 and recently when I try loading it up I get a message saying "required .DLL File is missing"? Does anyone know what this means?

It was working fine up untill a couple of weeks ago. Also, I don't know if the problem is linked but I have no audio stream in windows media player. Any help would be greatly appreciated:) Thanks!

hard to tell without more info. but a good starting point is to de-install & re-install CM9000
If it's a system DLL that's missing then something could have got corrupted. Has anything changed on your computer recently - added or removed any software or hardware?
You can also try a repair of your OS by re-installing it.

Good luck.

What OS are you running? if you are running 2K, and re-installing CM9K doesnt fix it, you can run the system file checker (go to start>run and type 'sfc /scannow') and see if any system files are corrupted. I think this should work in XP as well. If you have XP though, maybe try the system restore function, and go back to a day when you are sure it worked.

CM 9000 is pretty cheap now, especially if you get it from Amazon.

I have had a few problems with running CM9k in XP. Firstly I couldnt choose players in rated games, but that seems to be working okay now. Also I find it crashes a lot if you run other programs with it. If you start CM first it works okay, but if apps are running it can have really problems.

I'm using windows 98 if this further helps my enquiries?

Thanks again:)

Shredder 7 Shredder plays the most like a human. So if you want to train for playing against humans choose Shredder 7 from Chessbase.

Hiarcs 8.0 plays more humanlike than Schredder !! :o)

For Serious players ChessBase 8.0 and (Fritz/Schredder/Hiarcs/Junior you pick) is a must.

Beginners to intermediate players will get more out of CM9000.

I do not agree I have both and i do not agree. But next to that Hiarcs 8 is very slow compared to the rest of the Chessbase family. I would not recommend it.
baseline 37 ( +1 | -1 )
I chose to disagree with your "I do not agree" Humans play slower than Schredder!! :o)

Hiarcs is not a brute force program, it has a more positional style and I find it more fun to play against. Having said that I still use Fritz 8.0 to blunder check my completed games and it always seems to find something I totally missed. I am still getting by with Schredder 6.0 is 7.0 worth the upgrade?

shredder is with sh and not with sch :-) Shredder 7 has at least made some progress in the endgame. I had a postion where shredder 6 could not "find" the right plan. Shredder 7 found it within seconds. The plan is easy to find if you are a human.
baseline 61 ( +1 | -1 )
shredder - not Schredder you would think if I can learn chess I would be able to spell!!!!

I had understood that Shredder won the computer champs because of its endgame db? Anyway thanks for the advice I'll skip a round of golf and get shredder 7.0

Regarding CM9000 I do a rather silly thing with this program. :o) I download games of some of the better players here at GK use the games to create an opening book then I set up a new personality give them the traits I think that player has and import his special opening book. Then I can play blitz games with the puedo-GK personality.

I bet you are going to recommend a shrink! lol

golf... Golf must be expensive in your area....

Is shredder 7 better than 6 by enough to pay the extra $25 or so for it?

crossroads 17 ( +1 | -1 )
worth the money? "Is shredder 7 better than 6 by enough to pay the extra $25 or so for it?"

Depends how much you are going to use it and what for. If you are a heavy user for analysing i would say yes. If you only play against it i would say no.
